1964: The year supercomputing took off

Supercomputing is a term used to describe a computer that can perform calculations at extremely high speeds. The first supercomputer was created in 1964 by a team of researchers at the University of Illinois. This machine, called the Illiac IV, could perform 1 million calculations per second. Today, there are supercomputers that can perform billions of calculations per second. The fastest supercomputer in the world is the Sunway TaihuLight, which is located in China and can perform 93 quadrillion calculations per second. It’s much faster than the most powerful U.S. supercomputer, the Titan from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has 17-petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second) processing power and ranked as No. 4 on the latest Top500 list for June 2017. IBM's Summit, currently under construction and set to open next year, will have an estimated peak performance capacity of 200 petaflops. That means it will be able to calculate one quadrillion (1,000 trillion) calculations each second.
